Although charcoal production had been carried out in UK Woodlands for 1000s of years it had declined during the 19th and 20th centuries due to the lack of suitable woodland and the mass production of coal.
However, due to barbeques the demand has recently increased and much of the charcoal available is imported, being produced from hardwoods in the third world.
Recently the ancient woodland craft of charcoal production has been revived through a partnership between D M Chainsaws (Midland) Ltd and Charnwood Borough Council in a local Leicestershire woodland, The Outwoods - a site of special scientific interest.
Charnwood charcoal is produced from trees that have died, fallen down or have been taken out as they are non-native, invasive species, such as sycamore. Making our charcoal both environmentally friendly and sustainable, ideal in these ecologically minded times. From 5 tonne of wood we gain 1 tonne of top quality charcoal, and the wood we remove is replaced by native species such as rowan and oak, which isn't removed for the charcoal burning.
